Great Exchange of Prayer

Life has a way of throwing curve balls and bringing with it unexpected interruptions. Sometimes, these interruptions require thoughtful rerouting of long-awaited plans, potential investments, short—and long-term travel, building a new project, or even significant financial loss. Whatever it is, life just happens.

More often than not, interruptions bring many unanticipated emotions. Some are surprised and bring immense joy, and others are dreaded and painful.

What is your choice of action?

Where do you go, what do you do?

Prayer is a discipline, a retreat for the mind and spirit, and a refreshing fill-up for the heart. What do I mean by a fill-up of the heart?

Have you ever been anxious or worried about a person or thing you could not reach, personally fix, or change? You sit, try to arrest the thoughts running crazy through your mind, trying to play out a scenario that leaves your heart racing. In the anxious moments, logic escapes reasoning. The chase of not being reality, running with imagined thoughts.

I have a choice to make, and it needs to be decisive, one that takes control of the thoughts and filters truth through it. Step back and take a deep breath.

Articulate the driving thought behind the anxiety, fear, loss, or guilt. Now, take action to deal with the emotions.

For me, prayer is the process of taking control. As a Christ follower, I find that the great exchange always seems to be consistent. I bring anxiety to God and seem to gain peace. I bring fear to God and seem to gain faith. I bring confusion to God and seem to gain clarity. I bring hope to God and seem to gain mountain-moving faith.

The great exchange, prayer, is a safe place. God cares deeply, listens intently, and acts promptly to fill up the heart with the rest it needs. No matter the circumstance, no matter how long the wait, God’s heart is to journey with you, giving you the “fill-up” to carry you through it.
